I started Pilates at Contrology Studio earlier this year after my physical therapist recommended it to help with lower back pain, and I'm so glad I finally took the leap. I had been intimidated to try Pilates for years, which is probably why it took me so long to get started.

Louisville is so lucky to have Contrology right on Main St. I wanted to start Pilates after my two babies and was truthfully intimidated as a total newbie.

I just picked up Pilates reformer again earlier this year after a few year hiatus. The teachers are excellent and I love that it's small so you can get more personal attention to make sure your form is correct.

What kind of Pilates studio this is

Five clients working on a row of Reformers in the main studio at Contrology Studio

Seven people, one teacher

Every group class is capped at seven, for sixty minutes, so a teacher can actually get to you and fix what you are doing. Over twenty classes a week, Monday to Saturday.

A therapist working hands-on with a client on a treatment table in the Wellness Suite

Teachers who know what to do with an injury

The owner is a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant. Two Doctors of Physical Therapy teach here. If you arrive with a healing hip, a fused spine, arthritis or a post-partum core, that is not a caveat, it is the normal case.

The main studio at Contrology Studio showing Reformers, a Cadillac, a Spine Corrector and a Ladder Barrel

The whole apparatus, not just reformers

Reformer, Tower, Cadillac, Chair, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector, Magic Circle and mat. Having all of it is what lets a first-timer and a dancer work in the same room on the same morning.

You do not need to arrive knowing anything

Come as you are and we will handle the rest. Start with a free twenty five minute Discovery Session and we will tell you honestly where to begin.

New to this

What is classical Pilates?

The short version, with no jargon and nothing assumed.

  • A method, not a class format

Classical means the repertoire and the order are taught as Joseph Pilates built them, on the apparatus he designed. It is a system you learn, not a workout you attend.

  • What a reformer actually is

A sliding bed on springs. The springs add resistance or support depending on what your body needs, which is how the same exercise works for a beginner and for a dancer.

  • Why there is more than one machine

Reformer, Tower, Cadillac, Chair, barrels and mat each load the body differently. Having the full set is what lets a teacher work around a shoulder or a spine instead of skipping the exercise.

  • Low impact, high attention

Sixty minutes, controlled, breath-led, and nothing done fast enough to hide bad form. It is why one of our clients was sent here by her own physical therapist.

Why new clients start with private lessons

If you have never used the equipment, a group class is a poor first experience for everyone in it. Almost everyone here starts with three private lessons, learns the apparatus properly, then joins the beginner class series. It is the route our own clients recommend.

Over 20 classes a week, Monday to Saturday

Our classes

L1 means you have learned the equipment. L2 means you are comfortable and moving at pace. All Levels means both, in the same room. If you have never used a reformer, start with privates and we will get you there.

A teacher adjusting a client's foot on the Reformer footbar during a class

Reformer Foundations (L1)

Where almost everyone starts.

The reformer, taught slowly and in order. You will learn the footwork, the straps, the springs and what the machine is asking of you. Capped at seven, so nothing goes uncorrected.

A client working on the Reformer roll-down bar with a teacher watching closely

Bone Strength + Balance (L1)

Loading for bone density, and staying on your feet.

Weight-bearing and balance work built for anyone managing osteopenia, or who has noticed their footing is not what it was. Slow, specific, and taught by teachers with clinical backgrounds.

A teacher coaching a client on the Reformer with a second client working behind

Reformer: Strong + Aligned (All Levels)

The everyday reformer class.

Full-body reformer work with the exercise scaled up or down by spring, so a first-year client and a ten-year client can both be properly worked in the same hour.

A client working arm springs seated on a box, reflected in the studio mirrors

Pilates + Weights (All Levels)

Pilates control, plus load.

Classical work with hand weights added, for people who want strength on top of alignment. Good if you already lift and want to move better while you do it.

Three clients on mats in shoulder bridge with legs to the Tower push-through bars

Tower (L2)

Springs from the wall, not the carriage.

Work on the wall-mounted Tower units using push-through bars and leg springs. Different resistance, different angles, and a genuine change from reformer weeks.

A hand and a bare foot on the Wunda Chair pedal, spring and hardware in focus

Chair + Jump (L2)

Small machine, hardest hour.

The Wunda Chair, plus jumpboard work on the reformer. Low impact but genuinely cardiovascular, and unforgiving about control.

Community Class: Pilates Mat (All Levels)

Saturday mornings, open to everyone.

Our subsidised community class, mat-based and open to all levels. Part of making this work accessible to every body, everywhere.

Privates, duets and physical therapy

One to one is where most people here start, and where a lot of them stay. Whether you are learning the equipment for the first time or working around something specific, a private lesson is built around your body on the day.

  • 50-minute private with a certified Pilates teacher, $118. Packs from $395.
  • 50-minute private with a licensed physical therapist or PTA, $158. Packs from $584.
  • 50-minute private with a Level 1 teacher in training, $81. The most affordable way in.
  • 50-minute duet, $75 per person. Bring a partner, a friend or a parent.
  • 25-minute private, $57, when an hour is more than you need.
  • Cash-pay physical therapy on Tuesdays and Thursdays. No physician referral needed, and we can supply a billable note for your out-of-network claim.
  • Virtual privates and HIPAA-compliant telehealth follow-ups if you cannot get to Main Street.

New to the equipment? Almost everyone starts with the New Client Special, three private lessons for $275, then moves into the beginner class series. Mention it at your Discovery Session and we will map it out for you.

A Google review, verbatim

One person's route in

Leah had wanted to try Pilates for years. In her own words: “I had been intimidated to try Pilates for years, which is probably why it took me so long to get started.”

What changed was a recommendation from her own physical therapist, for lower back pain. She did not start in a group class. She started one to one: “I began with private lessons with Erin DiCamillo and highly recommend going that route if you’re new.”

I’m so glad I finally took the leap.
